“Brilliant” Newcastle star ruled out of Chelsea clash; he’s set to miss rest of the year

Newcastle United are now set to be without one of their mainstays against Chelsea and for the rest of 2025, in news broke on Friday morning by Eddie Howe.

Howe backs "excellent" Wissa to replace Isak

It’s been a long time coming, but Yoane Wissa is finally off the mark and on the pitch as a Newcastle player. The £55m man would have been the most relieved man in St James’ Park in midweek when he scored his first goal for the club in just his fourth appearance and Howe has now compared him to Alexander Isak.

The goal against Fulham laid down a marker to Newcastle’s record signing, Nick Woltemade, that the competition to become the Magpies’ starting No.9 is very much underway.

That can only be good news for Howe, who has craved quality in depth throughout his squad since the start of the season. Whether Wissa did enough against Fulham to maintain his place for Newcastle’s clash against Chelsea remains to be seen, however.

What we do know is that Newcastle will be without Tino Livramento following Howe’s latest injury update. The fullback has suffered an injury “complication” and now faces a spell on the sidelines.

The games Livramento will miss

Howe confirmed that Livramento will miss the rest of the year through injury and has suffered a knock on the same part of his knee that he previously had trouble with, complicating matters.

The Newcastle boss told reporters: “I don’t think it’s a serious injury. The complication we have is Tino has injured that knee before in a very similar area, so that always makes the potential recovery time a little bit longer, so I don’t think we’ll see him possibly before 2026.”

It’s a frustrating blow for the Magpies, who will already be without Dan Burn until the new year and may now have no choice but to ask the likes of Lewis Miley or Jacob Murphy to drop into the backline.

Previously dubbed “brilliant” by his Howe, Livramento is particularly a big miss. The England international has become a mainstay in Newcastle’s backline, but constant injury problems have stood in his way at times.

So far this season, the former Chelsea man has already missed 10 games and is likely to miss the next three games against Chelsea, Manchester United and Burnley before potentially returning against Crystal Palace in January.
